For one week, Daniel decided not to follow any automatic recommendation. He did not turn off every digital service or pretend that suggestions were harmful. He simply avoided the lists labelled “for you” and the next item offered after a song, video, or article. When he wanted something to watch or read, he had to choose a starting point himself.

The first evening felt less free than he had expected. Daniel opened a streaming service and discovered that he could name neither a film nor a director. The usual page had made choosing look effortless because it had already narrowed the field. Without that reduction, he spent ten minutes moving between categories and closed the app without watching anything.

On the second day, he changed the rule slightly. Rather than search for a perfect choice, he would begin with one clue: a title mentioned by a friend, a book he had seen in a library, or a subject he wanted to understand better. This did not remove uncertainty, but it gave his curiosity somewhere to begin. He read an essay about public gardens after remembering a conversation on a bus. The essay was not exactly what he expected, yet it led him to another writer whose work he enjoyed.

By the middle of the week, Daniel noticed that recommendations had not disappeared from his life. Friends still mentioned music, a colleague lent him a magazine, and a librarian pointed to a shelf. The difference was that these suggestions arrived with a reason: a memory, a question, or an observation about his interests. They did not claim to know him through a pattern of previous clicks.

The experiment also had costs. Daniel sometimes chose badly, and he missed the speed of a familiar list when he was tired. One night, he spent longer searching than reading. He also realized that a recommendation can introduce people to work they would never find alone. Rejecting every suggestion would be another kind of limiting habit.

At the end of the week, Daniel returned to the recommendation tools, but he used them differently. He treated them as invitations rather than instructions. If a suggested item interested him, he looked for a short description, looked up who had made it, or compared it with another option. His week had not taught him that independent choice is always superior. It had made him more aware that convenience and curiosity can work together when neither one is allowed to do all the choosing.
